SUMMARY:Creations with Ling-Yen Jones\, jewelry\, Jim Docker\, wood\, Bea Acosta ceramics & baskets
DESCRIPTION:Creations\nLing-Yen Jones\, Jim Docker and Bea Acosta\nA showcase of work by three local artists\nOpens Friday\, February 13 from 4-6 pm \nExhibit up through March 8 \nJacob Foyer\, Gualala Arts \n\nGualala Arts invites the community to experience “Creations\,” a group exhibition featuring the distinctive works of three local artists—Ling-Yen Jones\, James Docker\, and Bea Acosta. This compelling blend of art and craft opens with a reception on Friday\, February 13\, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Jacob Foyer. The exhibit will remain on view through March 8\, offering visitors a chance to explore the unique perspectives and materials each artist brings to their practice.\nJames Docker\, a seasoned woodworker and designer\, brings decades of craftsmanship and conceptual depth to the show. With a Master of Fine Arts from San Francisco State University and formative years spent studying in Kyoto\, Japan\, Docker’s work reflects a rich tapestry of influences—from Japanese boro textiles and tea ceremony aesthetics to the geometric clarity of Piet Mondrian. His pieces often echo the improvisational structure of jazz\, a genre he reveres\, and his approach to wood has been described as “quilting in wood.” Docker’s career spans over 60 years\, including custom home design throughout The Sea Ranch\, Napa Valley\, and the Bay Area. His knife blocks and boards\, originally crafted for friends and neighbors\, exemplify his commitment to both beauty and utility. \n\nJewelry artist Ling-Yen Jones offers a striking contrast with her finely wrought silver\, semi-precious stones\, and pearls. Based in Mendocino County\, Jones creates one-of-a-kind pieces that range from traditional to modern\, often incorporating motifs such as leaves\, birds\, and windows—symbols of growth\, hope\, and transformation. Her training includes studies with David Laplantz at Humboldt State University\, Monterey Peninsula College\, and workshops at the Mendocino Art Center. Jones is also the gallery coordinator for the Coast Highway Artist Collective in Point Arena and has exhibited widely across Northern California. Her work\, including evocative pieces like “Unmentionables\,” draws inspiration from the Ukiyo-E period of Japanese art\, blending expressive faces with hidden floral and romantic imagery to explore themes of serenity and everyday grace. \n\nBea Acosta rounds out the trio with her creations in clay and pine needle basketry. Since discovering her passion for clay in 2000\, Acosta has studied under Kay Like of Brandybuck Studios\, embracing hand-building techniques and natural finishes such as saggar firing with seaweed and horsehair. Her journey expanded in 2004 to include pine needle basketry\, where she now devotes most of her creative energy. Using materials like Watsonia and Amaryllis leaves\, sweet grass\, and sea grass\, Acosta weaves vibrant\, one-of-a-kind forms that often transcend traditional basket function. Her “pine needle woven creations” are meditative\, free-form expressions that reflect a deep reverence for nature and ancestral memory. Living on the coast continues to inspire her intuitive\, organic approach to making.\nTogether\, Jones\, Docker\, and Acosta offer a rich and varied exhibition that celebrates the intersection of artistry and craftsmanship. “Creations” promises to be a feast for the senses and a testament to the creative spirit thriving along the Mendonoma coast.

SUMMARY:Julia Carpenter\, needle felt art & Ling-Yen Jones\, jewelry at the Point Arena Lighthouse March 14-June 7\, 2026
DESCRIPTION:Please come visit Julia and Ling-Yen at the Whale Watch Room. \nAnd see more of Julia’s work at https://www.instagram.com/sonomacoastfeltworks/ \nand my work on my website Ling-yendesigns.com. \nThe opening reception for Julia Carpenter’s Whale Watch Room Gallery gallery exhibit “Coastal Threads“ is Saturday\, March 14 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Refreshments and hors d’oeuvres will be served. Jewelry by Ling-Yen Jones is also on display. The exhibit will remain on display through June 7\, 2026.\nArtist Statement\nCreating scenes of our ocean environment with natural fiber. The artwork represented here is comprised of wool and other natural fibers felted together with a special notched needle in a process called needle felting.\nI use a piece of felted wool as a base then use loose wool fibers (roving) and poke them into the base to create the picture. Many types and colors of wool are used\, as well as effect fibers such as silk and bamboo. The notches on the needle snag\, catch\, and tangle the fibers as they are poked into the base felt in what is a very meditative and repetitive exercise.\nInspiration\nWalks among majestic pines and cypress\, redwoods and madrones\, flowering fauna\, sprouting spotted mushrooms\, and the creatures of land and sea inspire me daily.\nBiography\nWorking as a textile artist for many years\, I have learned to weave\, quilt\, and batik. My love of textiles inspired me to study fashion design and then later interior design in the Bay Area. I worked as a color consultant\, faux finish painter\, and eventually Feng Shui practitioner in San Francisco before retiring to The Sea Ranch. Thanks to a friend who came to visit\, I began practicing the rudimentary procedures of an art called needle felting\, and I have developed a passion for it. My work is influenced by the natural splendor of this beautiful coast\, with all its wonders.

SUMMARY:The Light on the Edge of Darkness by Photography\, Scott Sewell and Jewelry\, Ling-Yen Jones
DESCRIPTION:Scott will be exhibiting at the Whale Watch Room with Ling-Yen’s jewelry. \nArtist Statement – Scott Sewell \nI don’t remember when I saw Point Arena Lighthouse for the first time. We passed through the area on family vacations several times in my childhood but I have no specific recollection of it. When I was 19\, my brother and I drove south along Highway 1 late at night and I do remember the flash of the light in the distance as we crossed over the Garcia River. The tower itself was only vaguely visible but the tremendous reach of the lens was apparent in the light fog. \nWhen I returned to the area in 2017\, I was looking for cliffs and crashing waves as a subject for my newly sharpened photography skills. While I remembered the coastline\, I did not remember the tall\, cylindrical Lighthouse that guarded it. \nWhen I got there\, I was fascinated. The tower looked different than any other lighthouse I had ever seen. It was more like a giant candlestick than the conical shape I was familiar with. It was built in 1870 and had a twin in Santa Cruz at Pigeon Point. I soon learned that it was cast concrete rebuilt from its original design after the great San Francisco earthquake of 1906. Its lantern room and the spiral staircase leading to it were its only original equipment. Its great first order lens was replaced due to the mercury in its rotating base some  years later and the light’s reach was thirty miles when it was built but now was only 10 miles. \nAs I explored the area looking for places to shoot\, it became clear why the Lighthouse was there. The ancient sandstone layers which make up the local sea bottom and the nearby cliffs have been tilted upward by plate movements over the last 20 million years to form reefs with razor sharp edges. This is easily seen on a walk from the Stornetta lands parking area to the Lighthouse. At the end of Point Arena\, the most dangerous reef of all can be seen about a mile offshore as turbulence and wave action just below the surface. Ships seeking refuge in Manchester Bay to the north would run aground here and the Lighthouse was placed here to warn them. \nFor a photographer\, the angles and views are endless. The Lighthouse can be shot from the south on fingers of land in Stornetta; from the point itself; from the hill along the Garcia River; and from the beaches of Manchester to the north. Over time\, I have shot from them all. Of course\, the Mendocino Coast is famous for its sunsets with its colorful skies in shades of red and orange. This often provides a dramatic backdrop for my photography. \nFor me\, though\, it is in the night under a full moon with the ground lights illuminating the tower that has the deepest meaning. There the Point Arena Lighthouse stands against the wind\, the stars and the raging surf as a sentinel against the 4\,500 miles of ocean to the west. It gives me pause and time to reflect. It is then that it truly feels like the light on the edge of darkness.

SUMMARY:43rd annual Palo Alto Festival of the Arts August 22-23\, 2026 10 am to 6 pm
DESCRIPTION:This high quality\, community-friendly event is hosted by the Palo Alto Chamber of Commerce with the support of the City of Palo Alto. This event attracts people every year from throughout California and the West Coast. The festival—celebrating its 43rd year—takes place on tree-lined University Avenue in beautiful downtown Palo Alto\, a vital economic area 35 miles south of San Francisco. \nThe backbone of the festival and the key to its success are the 250 fine artists and crafters whose display booths are placed back-to-back along University Avenue. These exhibitors are the reason why this festival attracts such a high percentage of fine artists and crafters whose work you’ll see only at a few select shows on the West Coast. \nWhile strolling through the festival\, don’t forget to stop by and listen to sidewalk piano virtuosos located at Bryant St. Look for the PLAY ME sign. More Info \nThe Italian Street Painting Expo—always a crowd-pleaser—will again showcase chalk artists from throughout the state\, creating larger-than-life works of art. Tasso Street is where it’s happening so don’t miss it. This year’s co-beneficiaries of the Italian Street Painting Expo fund-raisers are the Palo Alto Youth Community Service and Ada’s Cafe. \nLocal participation is high at this event\, throughout the festival\, the Kiwanis Club of Palo Alto will again be serving alcoholic beverages for everyone’s enjoyment. \nPLEASE NOTE: The City of Palo Alto has a ban on the use of plastic & paper bags for carrying purchased merchandise. The Chamber of Commerce highly recommends that festival attendees bring their own tote bags for easy transportation of multiple purchases. \nFor those driving to the festival\, free parking is within a block or two of the festival site\, with parking for disabled patrons in all city lots. Festival attendees though are encouraged to use public transit or ride a bike. For transit information go to 511.org. \nIf you are a dog owner thinking about bringing “Cuddles” to the festival\, please reconsider. Large crowds can easily make a typically mellow dog very anxious & sometimes aggressive.
