SUMMARY:Salon & Salon de Refuses May 15\, 2021 to June 21\, 21
DESCRIPTION:The Gualala Salon and Salon des Refusés has earned a reputation as the top judged and juried fine art exhibit on the Mendonoma Coast. Organized and curated by the North Coast Artists Guild\, the exhibit is held annually at the Gualala Arts Center and will fill three large gallery spaces with over one hundred pieces of fine art. Prestigious artists\, art dealers\, academics\, and collectors are recruited to be judges. \nThe judges decide which artwork will be accepted and shown in the Burnett Gallery. Work not juried into the Salon by the judges is displayed in the Salon des Refusés\, located in the Elaine Jacob Foyer and Coleman Hall. Thus\, all artwork submitted into the show is exhibited. Which artists have been selected into the Salon is a tightly held secret until opening night. \nThe original Salon des Refusés exhibition took place in Paris in 1863\, showing works that had been rejected by the official Paris Salon judges. These judges represented the French Academy and were advocates of a traditional\, orthodox style of painting and sculpture. In 1863\, they rejected almost 3\,000 pieces of work\, including many now considered masterpieces such as Manet’s Le Dejeuner sur l’Herbe and Whistler’s Symphony in White\, No. 1. \nThe resulting furor led Emperor Napoleon III to mandate that a second exhibition (dubbed the “Salon des Refuses”) be organized so that the public might judge the merits of the artwork themselves. In the spirit of the original Paris Salon des Refusés\, all visitors to the Gualala Salon des Refusés are able to vote for the “People’s Choice” awards. In fact\, many artists prefer to be selected as a “refusé” to receive the public’s opinion. This is a wonderful opportunity for artists to stretch themselves and experiment.

SUMMARY:Gualala Salon and Salon des Refusés May 15-June 20\, 2021
DESCRIPTION:Members are free to preview the exhibit this Friday\, May 14 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.\, and then on Saturday\, May 15\, everyone is invited to see the new works of art on display throughout the center\, including the Burnett Gallery (the Salon) and the Elaine Jacob Foyer (the Salon dés Refuses). Regular exhibit hours are 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. \nFollowing an open call to artists\, the show’s curator\, Bruce Jones and other volunteers set about preparing the art for the judges to consider\, and then proceeded to set each gallery with the paintings\, drawings\, ceramics\, jewelry\, sculpture\, fabric and more. Always a difficult task given the quality of the work entered in this annual event\, the judges will weigh-in with their selections.  \nThis year’s judges are April and Ron Dammann\, and happily they are not new to the challenge of judging fine art in our community. They applied their lifelong involvement in the arts as judges at Art in the Redwoods in 2013 and in the 2017 Salon. Their lives have been informed by art as both collectors and scholars.  \nWatch a video of April and Ron Dammann talk about art and the Salon and Salon des Refusés. \nApril Dammann\, with degrees in French literature from UCLA\, the University of Rochester and the Sorbonne\, is an art historian and art gallery archivist who has written four biographical art histories. She developed a career in screenwriting and theatrical production during her years in Hollywood\, where she and Ron lived in a home/art gallery that was designated an historic cultural monument. \nRon Dammann earned a B.A. in art history/anthropology at the University of Arizona and is a third generation art dealer. His family operated the Stendahl Galleries of Art for over a century. His experience restoring\, selling and appraising painting and sculpture increased the prestige of the historic gallery and led to his role as president. He was also president of the Art Dealers Association of California for three terms and headed the Los Angeles Ethnic Arts Council\, where he brought increased attention to his specialty: Pre-Columbian art of Mexico and Central America.

SUMMARY:Valentine's day Exhibition at the Coast Highway Art Collective
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception \n‘Poetry on the Spot’ returning to Point Arena \nBy Rozann Grunig \nThe members of the Coast Highway Art Collective are hosting their first opening reception of 2021 on Saturday\, Feb. 6 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. This Valentine’s Day-themed exhibit posed questions to the members of the Collective; “What does Valentine’s day mean to you\, your friends and family in the time of COVID 19? Is love complicated\, tumultuous or simple? How do you express it in your art?” Our members took this challenge to heart\, so to speak\, and this exciting and creative exhibit is the result. \nThe exhibit inside the gallery will feature works by new member\, Phil Clark\, woodworker; as well as pieces by Bea Acosta\, pine needle baskets; Andrea Allen\, Chinese Brush painting; Lena Bullamore\, drawing and painting; Colette Coad\, art glass; Ling-Yen Jones\, jewelry; Rozann Grunig\, photography; Kersten & Ants\, jewelry; Tamar Lenzi\, lapidary & wire wrapped Jewelry; Geraldine LiaBraaten\, photography; Jack O’Rourke\, watercolor; Brenda Phillips\, Ceramics; Scott Sewell\, photography; Deborah Threlkel Abalone Queen jewelry; Kathryn Weiss\, glass beads and jewelry. \nOn the patio\, local poets Blake More and Lauren Sinnott will write a poem for visitors for their special Valentine.  They are excited to revive “Poems on the Spot\,” the beloved tradition started by Caroline Cooke and Stephen Kessler back in the day of CityArt. “Lauren and Blake will be on our outdoor patio\, socially distanced\, while they talk with you and compose your poem\, either on a computer or written by hand\,” says gallery manager\, Ling-Yen Jones. “When your poem is finished\, they will email it or send it to you. There will be a small fee requested of $10 to $50.” \nLauren\, Blake and Ling-Yen will be interviewed on KGUA on Tuesday\, Feb. 2 at 9 a.m. to discuss the show and their approach to poetry and art.

SUMMARY:Shelter From The Storm: Art Created in these Turbulent Times
DESCRIPTION:I will be at the Gualala Art Center on Wed. Jan. 27\, 11 am to 2 pm. Please come by and visit the show and me. Gentle smiles. \nThis show is a wonderful exhibit to see positive\, and expressive art is what is seen at this show. \nIt is a wow. I am also proud of my community and like to say that members from the Coast Highway Art Collective\, Point Arena\, added their pieces to this exhibition go see Andrea Allen\, Chinese brush painting Colette Coad\, glass\, Chris Grassano\, painting\, Scott Sewell\, photography and Ling-Yen Jones\, jewelry. \n“Shelter From The Storm—Art Created in these Turbulent Times” is an exhibit consisting of works created about the challenges facing us as a society. There will be paintings\, photography\, collages\, sculptures and all media types encouraged and accepted. \nSince March\, each of us has been tasked with maneuvering forward during the age of COVID-19\, all the while contending with civil unrest\, fires\, and the collective grief imposed by self-isolation. The purpose of this exhibit is to create a dialog about what we have been doing and working on as artists\, each of us holding up a mirror reflecting our new cultural norms\, sometimes gratefully for the blessings in our lives\, sometimes angrily for the dramatic loss we all must contend with. Whatever you have been working on\, we would love to have you share it with us. \nThis was hard for me. I felt it was a hard uninspiring time. I felt pushed\, angry\, and frustrated. Yet I was asked for this exhibition to show and share what I was doing. I found some small inspired pieces that I was working on.  Thank you GAC for this opportunity to show and share the tiny light of joy I experienced. \nThis was Sus’s idea and what he wrote to inspire and request. \nWhen thinking about writing my ED letter this month\, I ran across this excerpt from Reference.com: \nArt influences society by changing opinions\, instilling values and translating experiences across space and time. Research has shown art affects the fundamental sense of self. Painting\, sculpture\, music\, literature and the other arts are often considered to be the repository of a society’s collective memory. Art preserves what fact-based historical records cannot: how it felt to exist in a particular place at a particular time. \nI hope you take your time to share with our community what you have “felt” during the past year. If you have not created something to share\, I hope you will take this “call to action” and create something\, anything that comes to you and articulate it and manifest it into this realm as something physical to share. \nIt is one thing to process feelings by creating art but\, by sharing art with your greater community as well\, it takes on a whole new meaning and impact for us all. \nI cannot thank each of you enough for believing in the arts and helping us get through 2020 and giving us hope for 2021. \nTogether we have proven that we can get through this with creativity\, generosity\, kindness and gratitude and of course my favorite\, LOVE. \nI look forward to rising to the occasion\, with all of you\, and going into this New Year with creative optimisms lifting our spirits to whatever the next day brings us. \nSus \n

DESCRIPTION:Not all is lost please see our virtual gallery tour. https://www.studiodiscoverytour.com/copy-of-artist-template-8 \nWe hope this will be moved to 2021. \nPlease visit me and Jane Head at Andrea Allen’s studio at 33620 Highway One Gualala\, CA 95445 \nPlease note\, The weekend of August 29-30 my work will be at her studio for you to see and I will be at her studio on Sept 5-7th labor day weekend. \nAndrea Allen\,  recent move to Gualala has totally fulfilled her passion for being part of a fantastic art community and continuing her painting while looking out of her studio window at the magnificent ocean.  Allen is incredibly inspired to incorporate all these new visual and sensory experiences into her work\, while continuing to utilize all the traditional Chinese techniques\, balanced with a subtle contemporary flair.  Ancient symbolism and philosophy continue to influence Allen’s work\, enhancing the feeling of vital energy and serenity.  The overall effect is for the viewer to be effortlessly invited into each painting\, experiencing a peaceful balance and harmony in a timeless continuum. \nLing-Yen is well known in the northern California artist community for her expertly crafted\, precious metal and semi-precious gemstone rings\, pendants\, brooches\, necklaces\, and earrings. \nMany of her pieces are conceived in elegant\, Oriental motifs\, and constitute a hallmark of her unique artistic expression. \nLing-Yen’s jewelry is made to fit all ranges of a fine jewelry spectrum\, from low-cost\, casual everyday accessories\, to that special\, high fashion\, treasure. \nJane paints in multiple layers of acrylics and various modeling pastes and plasters\, sometimes adding textured or hand-printed papers\, building colorful dimensional and complex surfaces with a more abstracted finish. She also makes hand-built ceramics adding whimsical birds flowers and animals to her pieces which are both sculptural and useful. \n

SUMMARY:Canceled Palo Alto Festival of the Arts in August 22 -23\, 2020
DESCRIPTION:Artists’s have been told we may be accepted automatically for the August 2021 show.\nI hope so and I hope to see you and your friends and family at that time.\nBe well.\nLing-Yen Jones\, Ling-Yendesigns.com\nlocation:\nUniversity Avenue between High & Webster Streets\nPalo Alto\, California (West)Event Dates: August 22\, 2018 – August 23\, 2020\n\n\n10 am to 6 pm both days. \n\n\nwww.mlaproductions.com/PaloAlto/\n\n\nThe backbone of the festival and the key to its success are the three hundred fine artists and crafters whose display booths are placed back-to-back along University Avenue. These exhibitors are the reason why this festival attracts such a high percentage of fine artists and crafters whose work you’ll see only at a few select shows on the West Coast. \nAnd don’t forget to stop by and listen to sidewalk piano virtuosos. Located on the plaza at the corner of University & Tasso Streets: Chopin and Chandeliers. For more info. \nAnd\, always a crowd-pleaser\, the Italian Street Painting Expo\, sponsored by the Palo Alto Weekly\, will again offer sixty chalk artists creating larger-than-life works of art all weekend long on Tasso Street. This year’s beneficiary of the funds raised by the Italian Street Painting Expo is Palo Alto’s Youth Community Service. \nLocal participation is high at this event. The Palo Alto Parents & Professionals for Art are the organizers and beneficiaries of the kids’ art & crafts area called the Kids’ Art Studio. Also\, the Kiwanis Club of Palo Alto will again manage and serve the micro-brews and fine wines that can be found throughout the festival. \nPLEASE NOTE: the City of Palo Alto has a ban on the use of plastic & paper bags for carrying purchased merchandise. The Chamber of Commerce highly recommends that festival attendees bring their own tote bags for easy transportation of multiple purchases. \nFor those driving to the festival\, free parking is within a block or two of the festival site\, with parking for disabled patrons in all city lots. Festival attendees though are encouraged to use public transit or ride a bike. For transit information go to 511.org. \nIf you are a dog owner thinking about bringing “Cuddles” to the festival\, please reconsider. Large crowds can easily make a typically mellow dog very anxious & sometimes aggressive. \nCheck out last year’s promotional clip for a live overview of the festival.

SUMMARY:Dolphin Exhibition Come Fly with Me featuring B.Kelley\, prints and L.Jones\, Jewelry
DESCRIPTION:Come fly with me!\nCome fly with me is a journey that I thought was about learning more about my work with some of my favorite birds the crane and swallow. However\, it is also about learning how to transition from being at home “sheltering in place” to exhibiting\, showing\, and sharing my work. My jewelry is my story. Come Fly with Me is an invitation to witness my story. We all have had the challenge of sheltering in place so each person may recognize aspects of my challenge this was one way I choose to address it. \nI appreciate being in this show with Barbara Kelley. She and I have shown together in previous Dolphin shows as well as she hosting me at her Sea Ranch home for the North Coast Artist guild “Studio Tour” for nine years. \nIt was good to have this time to create and think about what it means to come and fly with me. \nThe journey was to learn how to work with the big changes and to figure out how to fly. \nThank you for coming to see this show. Come fly with me. \n-Ling-Yen Jones
